Write Your Own Financial Fairy Tale
Write Your Own Financial Fairy Tale

You’re an author… you may not have realised but you’ve already been working for a while on the most important story you will ever write – your life!
What’s the story been to this point? And how will it play out from here?
One of the hardest things for us to do is to think long-term. Our brains haven’t yet adapted to the idea of living a long life as it’s a relatively new phenomenon. They’re still designed to focus on where our next meal is coming from.
That’s why we need to take some time to write the script.
What do you want your financial story to be? Would you prefer a fairy tale or a horror story?
I’m going to assume a fairy tale.
Therefore, you need to create the framework for your story by answering these questions:
- Where do you want to be in 12 months?
- Where do you want to be in 5 years?
- Where do you want to be in 10-15 years and beyond?
Chances are you may never have thought about these things before. However, it’s hard to write a story before you’ve worked out what it is you want to write about.
If you have trouble coming up with answers, then flip things around… where do you not want to be? That will guide you towards the answers you need.
Thinking about this can sometimes be confronting for people. Often that’s because it brings a sudden realisation that they are not doing what needs to be done in order to reach where they want to be.
That realisation is a powerful moment! It’s the fork in the road where you either see an opportunity to do something about it and start heading in the direction you want to go, or you continue along the same path and head further away from your dreams.
Sometimes people don’t want to think about the long term because they think things will change between now and then… they’re right! Things will change, there will be bumps along the way, pot holes to navigate and detours to take. That’s life but it shouldn’t stop you from trying to reach your destination.
Think about it this way, if you’re heading to the coast for a holiday and there are roadworks along the way that force you to detour, you don’t turn around and head home!
So, again I urge you to think about where you want your story to take you in 12 months, 5 years and 10-15 years and beyond.
That’s how you want your story to play out and then you can create the plan to give it the best chance of becoming reality.
Where will the money come from to bring your story to life? Are the financial decisions you’re currently making giving you the best chance of making your fairy tale come true?
If the answer is ‘Yes’, then congratulations and keep on doing what you’re doing.
If it’s ‘No’, or you’re not sure, and you think you could use some help from an independent expert to write and act out your own financial fairy tale, then give me a call. Your financial future is worth it.
Either way, now is the time to take ownership of your financial fairy tale and avoid ending up with a horror story instead!
I’ll leave you with words from Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’:
“Alice came to a fork in the road. ‘Which road do I take?’ she asked. ‘Where do you want to go?’ responded the Cheshire Cat. ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the Cat, ‘it doesn’t matter.”
Cheers,
Daniel
